Top 25 Community Colleges for Hispanics

Hispanic Community February 2022 PREMIUM
For this issue, Hispanic Outlook honors those community colleges across the country that serve the highest number of Hispanic/Latino students, according to the latest data available.

Over the past year, community colleges have faced enormous challenges as they navigate a pandemic at the same time as they strive to provide their students – who are frequently first-generation learners, full or part-time workers, single parents and minorities – with the best opportunities for improving their skills and moving forward in their careers. For this issue, Hispanic Outlook honors those community colleges across the country that serve the highest number of Hispanic/Latino students, according to the latest data available.

The first set of lists – on enrollment, Associate degrees awarded nationally and Associate degrees by region - refers exclusively to two-year institutions where Associate degrees are the highest degree granted. The last list  - on Associate and Bachelor's degrees awarded - includes community colleges where Bachelor’s degrees are the highest degree granted (colleges that have some four-year programs in addition to two-year programs).

In Fall 2020, each of the colleges on the first list enrolled more than 8,000 Hispanic/Latino students. East Los Angeles College and El Paso Community College were the top two institutions, with more than 20,000 Hispanic/Latino students enrolled at each. The colleges with the highest percentage of Hispanic/Latinos as a proportion of total enrollment were El Paso Community College (84%), Palo Alto College (77%), Cerritos College and Southwestern College (70% each).

In the 2019-20 academic year, the top four community colleges in terms of Associate degrees granted to Hispanic/Latino students were Pasadena City College, El Paso Community College, Riverside City College, and Chaffey College, each of which awarded more than 2,500 Associate degrees to Hispanic/Latino students. Altogether, the 25 community colleges on this list conferred more than 48,500 Associate degrees to Hispanic/Latino students. The colleges with the highest proportion of Associate degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students were Imperial Valley College (91%), El Paso Community College (86%), East Los Angeles College (77%), and Cerritos College (72%).

Regionally, the data on Associate degrees granted by these institutions to Hispanic/Latino students reveals that El Paso Community College is ranked first in the South, the largest region in the country (comprised of 17 states). In the West, Pasadena City College in California is in first place, while in the Midwest City Colleges of Chicago-Harold Washington College in Illinois ranks first, and in the Northeast, CUNY Borough of Manhattan Community College awards the highest number of these degrees to Hispanic/Latino students.

According to the final list (which includes community colleges that have some 4-year programs), South Texas College ranks first in awarding the greatest number of Associate and Bachelor’s degrees to Hispanic/Latino students; it also has the highest proportion of these degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students (96% of all degrees). Dallas College, Pasadena City College, Valencia College and the Lone Star College System round out the top five places on this list; each of these colleges awarded more than 3,000 degrees to Hispanic/Latino students in 2019-2020.
