Shippensburg University of Pennsylvania our students' experiences are as individual as they are. There are more than 75 programs of study including recent additions that prepare students for careers in growing fields including nanofabrication, software engineering, forensic science, geographic information systems, and supply chain management.
Shippensburg continues to recognized by several national publications for educational quality and support of students. U.S. News and World Report again ranked Ship among the best colleges and universities in the North in its book “Best Colleges 2011.” In the annual rankings, Shippensburg is also the 21st ranked public university in the region.
Shippensburg, a member of the Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education, is in Southcentral Pennsylvania, 40 miles southwest of Harrisburg and within easy driving distance of Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C.
The university offers bachelor's and master's degree programs in the College of Arts and Sciences, John L. Grove College of Business, and College of Education and Human Services. Students are able to develop their intellectual abilities and to obtain professional training in a variety of fields. A core of courses in the arts and sciences prepares students to think logically, read critically, write clearly, and verbalize ideas in a succinct and articulate manner; they also broaden students' knowledge of the world, past and present.
The goal is to have students develop to their utmost the intellectual, personal, and social capabilities they need to perform as competent citizens prepared to embark on a career immediately upon graduation or after advanced study. The personal attention given each student at Shippensburg is reflective of the strong sense of community that exists on campus and the importance of students within it. The university encourages and supports activities which give students many opportunities to apply the theories and methods learned in the classroom to real or practical situations. Student life programs and activities complement the academic mission and further assist students in their personal, social, and ethical development.
More than 2,500 of the university's approximately 7,200 undergraduates live on campus in nine residence halls. Work will begin in 2011 in building all new residence halls with the first phase to open in Fall 2012. While the majority of students are from Pennsylvania, the university has attracted students from 15 nations and 20 states. The university also has about 1,200 graduate students. Students also find plenty of ways to put a personal spin on their education -independent study, the Honors Program, faculty-student research projects, and study abroad are just some examples.
Nearly 90 percent of faculty members have the highest earned degree possible in their respective fields, and all classes are taught by faculty, not graduate assistants. The student/faculty ratio of 19 to 1 allows for a personalized education.
Shippensburg is accredited by Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education, AACSB International, ABET Inc., American Chemical Society, Council on Social Work Education, Council for the Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, International Association of Counseling Services, National Council for the Accreditation of Teachers, and Council for Exceptional Children.
