Chartered by an Act of Congress in 1893, American University is a four-year independent liberal-arts coeducational university located in northwest Washington, DC. American University is an experiential-learning school, offering over 500 cooperative education and internship options, as well as small classes with personalized attention for its students. American University attracts its 12,000 students from all 50 states and nearly 150 foreign countries. Slightly over half of the students are undergraduates; slightly under half are enrolled in masters, doctoral and professional degree programs. The 635 full-time faculty of American University are highly accomplished, award-winning experts in a vast array of fields.
