Indiana University Research and Technology Corp. issued record 53 U.S. patents in 2015-16

Indiana University researchers named on 165 domestic, global patents

INDIANAPOLIS -- The United States Patent and Trademark Office issued a record 53 patents in the 2015-16 fiscal year to the Indiana University Research and Technology Corp., which protects, markets and licenses intellectual property developed at Indiana University so it can be commercialized by industry.

The 53 issued U.S. patents in 2015-16 represent a 29 percent increase over the previous year's 41. In the previous four years, IURTC was issued 13, 18, 36 and 41 U.S. patents.

Marie Kerbeshian, vice president of technology commercialization, said the record number of U.S. patents is the result of several factors.

"IU researchers submit hundreds of invention discoveries each year, which are vetted by IURTC technology managers. The managers determine which inventions can be protected and the best method to do so, including submitting a patent application to the USPTO," she said. "It can take up to several years for a patent to be issued after an application has been made. The work conducted by IU researchers and IURTC managers has increased the number of invention discoveries and patent applications, which means there is a larger pool that can be turned into issued patents."

IURTC was also issued 112 global patents in 2015-16, for a final total of 165. Global patents were issued from Australia, Belgium, Canada, Chile, China, Colombia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Jamaica, Japan, Lebanon, Mexico, Netherlands, Norway, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey and the United Kingdom.
