When choosing a teaching career, the first thoughts that come to mind are elementary and high school, and college. You may be willing for a change while still in education, or you may be a former educator who wants a more abrupt change in your career and use your skills in a different professional environment. Whatever the case, the field of education offers a wide variety of other opportunities for current or former educators planning a new career.
Some teaching options
Preschool teachers. Children start school before they go to first grade. If you like a younger audience, this is a perfect option because, besides teaching the main subject areas, such as math, basic writing, and reading, you will be helping develop a conscience for social standards.
Elementary school teachers may have to specialize in one subject to teach in higher grades, such as biology, history, art, ESL, English, music, and so on.
From ninth to twelfth grade, high school teachers specialize in one single subject and may have to assist students with college admissions, writing recommendation letters, etc.
College professors work with younger adults and will need, at least, a Master's degree, if not a Ph.D. depending on a variety of factors.
Special education teachers have special training to prepare individualized educational plans for students with special needs.
Substitute teachersperform their duties in the absence of the regular teacher. It is one of the most flexible ways of teaching since they are called at a moment's notice and follow the teacher's plan. However, they need to prepare extra materials when the teacher has not provided them with an assignment.
Other careers found at all levels include school counselors who offer students academic guidance. They can also find a place in the private sector as career counselors. School librarians share many of a teacher's skills since they serve as guidance and information source to students and the public. This position requires a Master's, though. A school secretary is in charge of administrative work monitoring student and teacher attendance and school accounting, among other duties.
Educational institutions do not only need teachers and professors inside a classroom—School and College administrators more than often need a background in education. School administrators cover positions of principal, vice principals, coordinators, instructional specialists, etc. They often need a Master's degree minimally. College administrators typically include the president, vice president, dean, and chair.
Options outside the education field
Teaching skills, such as time management, student management, communication skills, interpersonal relations, leadership, problem-solving, conflict resolution, critical thinking, etc., are valuable in almost every job. For example, a special education teacher may find a new call for social work or occupational therapy.
A sharper career shift may take a teacher to various positions in the sales field, requiring, for instance, solid skills in communication, teamwork, organization, leadership, to name a few.
Teachers working in insurance can also be an alternative career option since they have to train to communicate smoothly and explain concepts clearly and concisely.
HHRR is another ample opportunity to put teacher's abilities into practice. Companies require trained individuals to recruit, train, mentor, guide, and organize staff.
