Couple Pledge $1M To Cancer Research At University

Gift To Expand Pancreatic Cancer Research

TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — An Ohio husband and wife have pledged $1 million to expand pancreatic cancer research at the University of Toledo.

The university says the gift from Hal and Susan Fetterman, of Toledo, will fund research into pancreatic cancer treatment. The National Cancer Institute says pancreatic cancer is the third leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

The donation setting up the UTMC Pancreatic Cancer Research Innovation Fund honors Hal Fetterman's sister, Joyce Schwyn, and three friends who died from pancreatic cancer.

Half of the donation will go to recruit a top-tier faculty researcher to UT's College of Medicine and Life Sciences. The other half will cover costs of an upcoming clinical drug trial at the University of Toledo Medical Center and support a grant competition among faculty cancer researchers.
