Top 100 Colleges and Universities for Hispanics

Hispanic Community October 2022 PREMIUM
All the lists on the following pages provide a clear picture of the specific institutions across the nation that serve Hispanic/Latino students, conferring degrees across different levels and preparing them in diverse fields of study.

In the Top 100 issue, Hispanic Outlook recognizes the higher education institutions across the country that enroll the highest number of Hispanic/Latino students, as well as those where students from this community make up a large proportion of the total student body. The latest available data, from the 2020-21 academic year, clearly shows the negative impact the Covid19 pandemic has had on enrollment in higher education overall, and on the participation of Hispanic/Latino students in particular, with some substantial declines in comparison to 2019-20 figures.

Thus, the institutions listed here deserve to be recognized and honored for continuing to serve the largest numbers of Hispanics/Latinos, despite the setbacks and challenges they faced over the past years. They have had to make good use of their resources, redefine their modes of educational delivery, and think of innovative ways to support their students, especially the most vulnerable ones (first-generation, minority, economically struggling), in order to weather the storm in the best way possible.

All the lists on the following pages provide a clear picture of the specific institutions across the nation that serve Hispanic/Latino students, conferring degrees across different levels and preparing them in diverse fields of study.

Among two-year institutions, in 2020-21 the top three in terms of enrollment of Hispanic/Latino students (with more than 25,000 each) were East Los Angeles College, El Paso Community College and Houston Community College. Altogether, the top 10 two-year institutions served 230,541 Hispanic/Latino students, nearly 20,000 students less than in 2019-20, but still a substantial number that will benefit from this critical pipeline for employment and further education. Each one of the two-year institutions in this top 100 list has more than 5,000 Hispanic/Latino students enrolled.  In terms of Hispanic/Latino students as a proportion of total enrollment, four of the two-year colleges on this list were more than 80% Hispanic/Latino:  Texas Southmost College (94%), Imperial Valley College (91%), Southwest Texas Junior College (87%) and El Paso Community College (84%).

Among four-year institutions, in 2020-21 the top 10 served slightly more than 348,000 Hispanic/Latino students altogether, a drop of 34,000 from last year. The top three – Miami Dade College, Dallas College and Florida International University – retained their position from 2019-20, enrolling more than 47,000 Hispanic/Latino students each. Six institutions on this list had a student body primarily composed of Hispanic/Latino students (more than 80% of total enrollment): Laredo College (97%), The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (91%), Texas A & M International University (87%), The University of Texas at El Paso (82%), Rio Hondo College (81%) and Florida National University – Main Campus (81%). It is also notable that more Hispanic women than men were enrolled at most of the top 100 institutions on this list.

In the 2020-21 academic year, the institutions that awarded the largest number of associate degrees to Hispanic/Latino students were Miami Dade College, Dallas College and South Texas College, and the top schools in terms of associate degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students as a proportion of all associate degrees granted were Laredo College (98%), South Texas College (96%) and Imperial Valley College (94%).

Florida International University, the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and California State University - Northridge awarded the largest number of bachelor’s degrees to Hispanic/Latino students, while The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley and Texas A & M International University had the largest percentage of these degrees awarded to Hispanic/Latino students (with 93% and 92% of all degrees respectively). Regarding graduate studies, Grand Canyon University, Florida International University and Western Governors University stand out for conferring the largest number of master’s degrees to Hispanic/Latino students (more than 1,600 each), while Miami Regional University and the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley had the largest proportion of master’s degrees awarded to this community (97% and 80% of the total master’s degrees awarded).
