CSUSM To Increase Number Of Latino And Latina Teachers

University Receives $2.7M Grant

California State University San Marcos has received a $2.7 million grant to increase the number of Latino and Latina teachers.

Teachers across the nation do not measure up to the demographics of the students they are teaching including San Diego County. Hispanic students in particular make up 48 percent and only 20 percent reported their race or ethnicity according last year’s state data.

The five-year grant aims to help make the teaching population more reflective of the student bodies in North County where the disparity among Hispanic students and teachers has reached 60 percent in some districts. Research has concluded that there is a real need to diversify the teaching force to benefit all students of color. CSU San Marcos students are about 40 percent Hispanic however Hispanic teaching credential candidates were on average 17 percent from 2014 to 2017 closely matching the several North County school districts.

As the grant is exclusive to Hispanic-serving institutions The School of Education at San Marcos is using it for teaching programs entrance exams, teaching credential exams for students, hiring staff members that will recruit and mentor Hispanic students to enter the teaching profession, tutoring and cultural proficiency training for university faculty.
