iSchool At Illinois Launches BS/IS Degree

New STEM Degree To Provide Human-Centered, Interdisciplinary Approach

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign School of Information Sciences (iSchool at Illinois) is launching a Bachelor of Science degree in information services (BS/IS). This is the first for the campus and universities in the state of Illinois to equip graduates to compete in today’s technology oriented market.

The new STEM degree will provide a human-centered, interdisciplinary approach to managing and using information for students to combine technology skills with learning how people interact with information.

Students in the program will train for work in the private sector, education, health care, business and finance, arts and communications, and government potentially being a data analyst, user experience designer, database manager, policy analyst, technology support specialist or web content analyst/manager.

Associate Professor Emily Knox, BS/IS program director, will provide leadership for the new degree. "The BS/IS focuses on helping people use information and technology to meet their goals and benefit society. It will offer an education in the core values of library and information science—including equitable and open access to information, user privacy and confidentiality, information ethics, inclusion and diversity, and intellectual freedom—to a wider audience," she said.

The degree program requires seven courses including database, research methods and electives. BS/IS students will design information systems and services, organize, manage and enhance information and interpret data for real-world application and collaboration.

The iSchool will start offering the BS/IS in fall 2020. Some required courses will be available in fall 2019.
