Loyola University New Orleans is awarding its Integritas Vitae Award to physician and teacher Dr. Anthony Lazzara who left his tenured faculty position at Emory University School of Medicine to practice at a home for destitute ill children near Lima, Peru.

Doctor Practices At A Home For Destitute Ill Children Near Lima

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — A physician and teacher who left a tenured faculty position 35 years ago to aid poor children in Peru is set to receive an honor from Loyola University New Orleans.

The Jesuit-run private university says its Integritas Vitae (in-teh-GRIH'-tahs VEE'-tay) Award will be presented to Dr. Anthony Lazzara on Friday.

A native of Tampa, Florida, Lazzara is a graduate of Tampa Jesuit High School and Spring Hill College.  He received his medical degree at Tulane University School of Medicine.

In 1983, Dr. Lazzara left a tenured faculty position at Emory University School of Medicine to serve those in need in Peru .

He now practices at a home for destitute ill children near Lima.
