Montclair State U Launching New Medical Humanities Degree Program 

Montclair State University is launching a new bachelor’s degree program for fall 2018.

The new Medical Humanities program was founded to study the wide variety of questions pertaining to health and illness while also connecting the hard science of modern medicine with the healing powers of art. This program will examine the ins and outs related to health struggles with specific focus on illness understanding.

Subjects of study include:

 ~ the ethics of care

~ patient advocacy

~ body image

~ narrative medicine

~ disabilities rights

~ medical racism

~ reproductive autonomy

~ genetic counseling

~ arts-based therapies

~ public health

~ health policy

~ the nature of death and dying

Through the program students will develop skills in critical thinking, ethical decision-making, oral communication and writing. Additionally, courses will explore different social contexts, belief systems, historical traditions and literary works effects on perspectives.

Medical Humanities graduates can find employment in hospitals, universities, pharmaceutical companies, nursing facilities, physicians’ offices, retirement communities, outpatient centers, as well as insurance carriers. The degree will prepare students for medical school, law school and a wide range of humanities and social sciences programs.
