NFL Awards University In NC $14.7M Grant

University To Study Neurologic Health Outcomes In Former NFL Players

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill was awarded a $14.7 million grant from the National Football League (NFL) to examine 20-year neurologic health outcomes in former NFL players. It is a five-year, multi-institution project that will also investigate diagnosis, treatment and the prevention of chronic traumatic encephalopathy.

The main purpose of the grant is to study the long-term neurologic health consequences of concussions and sub-concussive injuries and is the largest cohort of former NFL players to ever be studied. This project stems from growing concerns in the medical and sports fields that repetitive concussions can lead to chronic neurologic health problems in later life.

Partners in the study include Boston Children’s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine Center, Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center at Harvard University, the Medical College of Wisconsin, and the University Orthopedic Center-State College, Pennsylvania. Carolina partners that are involved are the Center for the Study of the Retired Athletes and the departments of exercise and sport science, and psychology and neuroscience in the College of Arts & Sciences; the departments of neurology and radiology in the UNC School of Medicine; and the department of epidemiology in the Gillings School of Global Public Health.
