New Initiative Gives Every NYC Public HS Student Free Reusable Bottles

Initiative Part Of The Zero Waste Challenge

The Mayor’s Office of Sustainability and the NYC Department of Education has launched a new initiative giving every public high school student in the city a free reusable S’well bottle.

Through S’well, New York’s high school students will have a significant impact on reducing the City’s waste. The bottle giveaway is part of the City’s BRING IT sustainability campaign that focuses on helping reduce waste in the schools and homes of the students and their families. BRING IT is giving away over 320,000 reusable bottles that can reduce the use of single-use plastic in the city by almost 54 million bottles.

S’well and BRING IT stems from a larger goal to reduce the amount of city waste that is sent to landfills and incinerators to zero by 2030 under the Zero Waste Challenge. The campaign aims to establish a cleaner, fairer city starting with the City’s youth and working their way up. A major source of preventable waste in New York and all around the world is single-use plastic bottles that are not biodegradable.

BRING IT is using waste-reducing behaviors and products like S’well to assist the City in achieving their zero waste goal. This is just one of a wide range of programs and events that will raise awareness for sustainability, cultivate green job mentorship opportunities, and encourage meaningful environmental actions.
