UC Davis Awarded $4.9M Grant For Open Textbook Pilot Program
The U.S. Department of Education has awarded a $4.9 million grant for the University of California, Davis (UC Davis) to develop a free open textbooks program for select subjects.
Funded by the Congress FY 2018 omnibus spending bill, UC Davis will lead collaboration among 12 campuses. The pilot program will design open textbooks for popular fields such as Chemistry and career-technical education (CTE). Those course textbooks are among the most expensive and constantly require an updated edition to keep up with changing technology.
An open textbook program allows for diverse enrollment in courses that can usually have a financial roadblock. Over the past decade the cost of college textbooks has increased by 88 percent. This calls for an immediate need for open textbooks that are available in the public domain, released under license for free use, reuse, modification and/or sharing with others.
UC Davis plans to expand the LibreTexts multi-institutional open textbook service that already exists for the development of the next generation to have open-access texts to improve all levels of postsecondary education. LibreTexts will become a massive living library that accommodates the needs of faculty.
UC Davis’ consortium on the project consists of the University of Arkansas, Little Rock (AR), Saint Mary's College (IN), Prince George Community College (MD), Hope College (MI), American River College (CA), Contra Costa College (CA), Cosumnes River College (CA), Diablo Valley College (CA), Folsom Lake College (CA), Los Medanos College (CA), Sacramento City College (CA) and California State University system.
