Cuomo Expands Puerto Rico Recovery, Rebuilding Initiative
SUNY And CUNY Students Help Launch New Disaster Mental Health Initiation
Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is expanding the highly successful New York stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative. They will be deploying 500 more SUNY and CUNY student volunteers and launching a new disaster mental health initiative. SUNY and CUNY volunteers will be cleaning, repairing and restoring damaged homes.
Faculty, graduate students and local non-profit partners will provide practices for better coping skills for those still experiencing trauma from during and after the disaster. The schools have partnered with UNICEF USA to help children and families. Traumatized children have difficulties learning. The initiative will offer evidence-based, trauma-informed training and tools to educators, local organizations and programs working with children and other high-risk communities.
Additionally New York Power Authority and the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority are continuing their partnership to rebuild and stabilize Puerto Rico’s power grid, organize and maximize efficiencies in its utility operations and prepare for future severe storms.
New York continues to be at the forefront of lending support to island recovery. Students will deploy for two weeks earning college credit as soon as winter break. SUNY and CUNY will continue efforts until they feel the job is done.
