Seton Hall U’s New Graduate Program

Program In Part Focuses Digital Communication

Seton Hall University’s College of Communication and the Arts is launching a new graduate program. The Masters of Arts in Communication program will enhance students' communication competencies and knowledge in an interactive environment that reflects real-world scenarios.

The 36-credit campus-based program offers two areas of study, Digital Communication and Communication Technologies, and Communication in Organizations.

Digital Communication and Communication Technologies will focus on communication technologies in corporations, organization and human relations including device usage, adoptions and applications through courses like Theory and Practice of Digital Communication, the Internet and Communication, New Media, Organizations, and Culture, and Communication Technologies Ethics.

Communication in Organizations explores enhancing workplace communication capabilities by focusing on decision making and problem solving within employee relations, management communication and digital interaction in courses like Introduction to Organizational Communication, Organizational Culture, Training & Development, and Employee Relations.

Program Director and Professor Renee Robinson notes, "Understanding communication, its components and complexities equips us with the power to be change agents. If you're interested in creating, exploring and transforming your career, community or broader world, our program can help you initiate that academic or professional conquest."

A unique course, Communication Portfolio, is designed to assist students from a variety of backgrounds in meeting and demonstrating individual goals in both personal and professional settings.

Upon completion of the program and portfolio course, students will have a robust portfolio showcasing their communication skills and abilities in a virtual dossier.

"The launch of this exciting new program puts the College in a prime position to prepare graduate students for both careers and further educational studies," says Deirdre Yates, dean of the College of Communication and the Arts. "The concentrated tracks provide students the opportunity to study, understand and ultimately master the nuanced trends and methods of communication in both broad and specific settings. We're thrilled to introduce this innovative and challenging new program."

Professor Robinson also notes, "A priority for the new program is to encourage stronger and better linkages between undergraduate (B.A.) and graduate programs (M.A.) in communication. As a result, students have the option to pursue the standalone M.A. program, or qualified undergraduate students can complete both their B.A. and M.A. degrees in an accelerated fashion, streamlining the approach to cohesively pursue their career aspirations and goals."

"The dual-program is designed to challenge students academically throughout the college experience," she adds. "It also requires the program faculty to constantly reassess curricular modifications that include student performance indicators and feedback across the undergraduate and graduate student experience leading to the constant evolution and delivery of a curriculum reflective of societal and student need."

Students interested in the B.A./M.A. Communication program are encouraged to apply during their sophomore year and start in their junior year. They can apply in Fall and Spring semesters. Qualified applicants will be considered for the Dean's Graduate Scholarships and a limited number of full-tuition scholarships are available both within the College and University.
