Smithsonian Latino Center Gallery 2021

$10M Donation Funds This 1st Gallery Space For The Center

The Smithsonian Latino Center is excited to announce their first gallery space, thanks to a donation from the Molina Family. Opening in 2021, the Molina Family Latino Gallery is dedicated to celebrating the U.S. Latino experience and will open at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. At 4,500 square feet the gallery will feature bilingual stories for all audiences, rotating exhibitions with multimedia activities, objects as well as first-person narratives complemented by participants and viewer-generated content.

The Smithsonian Latino Center is named the Molina Family Latino Gallery thanks to a $10 million donation made by five members of the Molina family. This gallery space honors their late father Dr. C. David Molina, a health-care leader in California that founded Molina Healthcare Inc.

“It is a great privilege to make this gift in memory of our father,” said Martha Molina Bernadett on behalf of her siblings, Mario, John, Janet and Josephine. “His passion for helping others and entrepreneurial spirit helped build a legacy that we are all proud to contribute to today.”

“We’re thrilled to finally be realizing the dream of having a Latino gallery at the Smithsonian, but we recognize that our job continues outside of the museum’s walls,” said Smithsonian Latino Center Director Eduardo Díaz. “Latino history is American history, and we have a responsibility to reflect the stories and experiences of Latinas and Latinos in the U.S. today. We’ll continue to do that not only through this future gallery, but also through our diverse programmatic, educational and professional development programs, as well as our work to unlock and increase access to Latino content across the Institution.”
