Award-winning journalist, documentarian, entrepreneur and philanthropist Soledad O’Brien is delivering the University of Oklahoma’s Commencement address at 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, in The Gaylord Family – Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, 180 W. Brooks St.
Soledad O’Brien has received three Emmys for her coverage of race issues and the 2012 presidential election. Her reporting on Hurricane Katrina and the BP Gulf Coast Oil Spill earned George Foster Peabody Awards. She hosted and wrote the companion book to the CNN docuseries “Latino in America,” that received the UNITY: Journalists of Color Award in 2010. “The Next Big Story,” her memoir, was released in 2010.
O’Brien is an alumnus of Harvard University who currently hosts “Matter of Fact,” on the weekends. She is a member of both the National Association of Black Journalists and Hispanic Journalists.
María de la Soledad Teresa O'Brien (Soledad O’Brien) is the daughter of immigrants, her father is from Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, and her mother from Havana, Cuba.
O’Brien and her husband, Brad Raymond, created the PowHERful Foundation in 2011 to help young women from low-income backgrounds with financial assistance, mentorship and services to attend and complete college.
