The incoming freshman class at Virginia Tech will be the most diverse in the school's history. The Roanoke Times reports that 34 percent of the Blacksburg school's 6,400 first-year students are classified as either as first-generation, low-income or minority students. The school's goal is to reach 40 percent by 2022.

A third set of 100 New York college students and construction workers is headed to Puerto Rico to help rebuilding after Hurricane Maria's heavy blow to the island last year. New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced the volunteer deployment Sunday. It's the third since the start of June.

A federal judge on Monday ordered a temporary halt to any deportations of reunited families who were separated by the Trump administration after crossing the southwest border. The American Civil Liberties Union had asked Judge Dana Sabraw to delay deportations a week after reunification.

The South Carolina lottery generated a record $435 million for education for the fiscal year that ended June 30. Most of the money raised by the lottery goes for merit-based, college scholarships. Trustees OK $1.7M For University Of Arkansas Medical Campus [Education News]

University of Arkansas trustees have approved a $1.7 million renovation at the school's medical campus in Fayetteville. Trustees on Monday unanimously approved the renovations to support classrooms and lab space for students in a new occupational therapy program, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported. The three-year, clinical doctorate program expects to enroll its first students in 2020, said Program Director Sherry Muir.
