Students Receive Real World Experience Through The Data Company Bombora

The University of Nevada, Reno has announced a big data minor in their College of Engineering. This new interdisciplinary minor aims to give students the technical skills and knowledge to help solve evolving challenges in analyzing all types of data. To compensate for the rapid advancements in computer and Internet technology that has provided a mass accumulation of data, this new minor allows for opportunities in big data management, analysis, modeling and retrieval. Students are getting real world experience through the data company Bombora and others that have partnered with the College of Engineering.

Bombora collects intent data that businesses can use to inform sales and marketing decisions. "Interns from the University have proven to be an incredible source of talent across the organization, but have had an especially outsized impact on Bombora's technology teams: Engineering, IT, Product and Data Science," said Nicholaus Halecky, Bombora's director of data science. "Student's contributions are captured by their participation directly as a member of a tech team, providing them industry experience in modern software development, workflows and technologies."

Students in the minor will work on how to process big data, data mining, framework inspection and management of a student database. Not just for College of Engineering students the minor is available for journalism, law enforcement, medicine and business. Courses for the 18-credit minimum minor include statistics, computer science, mathematics and information systems.
