U of Virginia Earns NSF $3M Grant

Money To Launch Grad Program In Cyber-Physical Systems

The University of Virginia School (UVA) of Engineering has earned a National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to launch a graduate program in cyber-physical systems.

UVA Engineering’s Link Lab is developing a new program that trains graduate students in making discoveries that can be translated into new technologies, products and services. NSF is awarding the Link Lab $3 million to implement the program.

The center of excellence in cyber-physical systems research and education expects the new program to become a national model for graduate education in cyber-physical systems. Over the years, the need for the program grew evident as graduate students have not been adequately prepared for fundamental discovery and innovation. U.S. companies have indicated a critical need in these types of professions.

The program supports doctoral students working on cyber-physical research and creates the option for graduate students in other fields to pursue a cyber-physical systems concentration. Further plans include establishing an 18-month master’s degree with a new curriculum with a focus on hands-on learning; research on real world, multidisciplinary problems with cyber-physical systems approach and professional development.

UVA is one of 17 projects funded by NSF working on diversifying education in fields for the next generation.
