California Gov. Jerry Brown is crystal clear that his National Guard will help President Trump go after drugs and thugs on the Mexican border, but not immigrants. Drawing that line may be hazy. Brown's pledge of 400 troops allows the president to boast that governors in all four border states back his mission to send the Guard on its third large-scale deployment since 2006.

California Gov. Jerry Brown accepted President Donald Trump's call to send the National Guard to the Mexican border, but rejected the White House's portrait of a burgeoning border crisis and insisted that his troops will have nothing to do with immigration enforcement. The Democratic governor broke a week of silence Wednesday by agreeing to contribute 400 troops, though not all will be on the border.

Data Shows Improvement By Hispanic, Black Students In Nevada [Education News]

National testing data shows that while Nevada students overall are still falling behind national averages in math and reading, there have been signs of improvement. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports that results from the National Assessment of Educational Progress show that black and Hispanic students in the state have improved their average test scores.

Sessions To Address Immigration At Border Sheriffs Meeting [Beyond Education]

As thousands of National Guard troops deploy to the Mexico border, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions plans to bring his firm stance on immigration enforcement to New Mexico where a group of Southwest border sheriffs are meeting Wednesday. Sessions will speak in Las Cruces at the Texas Border Sheriff's Coalition Annual Spring Meeting with the Southwestern Border Sheriff's Coalition.

Arizona Court Rejects Lower In-State Tuition For Immigrants [Education News]

Arizona's three state universities and its largest community college district say they will raise tuition immediately for young immigrants granted deferred deportation status in the wake of a court ruling. The Arizona Supreme Court ruled that young immigrants in the program started by former President Barack Obama are not eligible for lower in-state college tuition.

Former Colombian Rebels Blame US For Leader's Arrest [Beyond Education]

Leaders of Colombia's disbanded FARC rebel army accused the U.S. on Tuesday of trapping a prominent rebel negotiator on a drug warrant in order to sabotage the country's already struggling peace process. The shock arrest Monday of Seuxis Hernandez played into fears that the former guerrillas of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia haven't cut ties to the country's flourishing criminal underworld.

Some National Guard members have started arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border with more expected as federal government officials seek ways to curtail illegal immigration. The Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and New Mexico on Monday committed 1,600 Guard members to the border, giving President Donald Trump many of the troops he requested to fight what he's called a crisis of migrant crossings and crime.

Puerto Rico's Department of Education announced Thursday that it will close 283 schools this summer following a sharp drop in enrollment amid the island's long economic slump and the continued departure of families after Hurricane Maria. Education Secretary Julia Keleher said there would be no layoffs, with teachers and other employees being reassigned to other schools.

Mexico Starts Giving Caravan Migrants Transit Visas [Beyond Education]

The Mexican government began handing out transit or humanitarian visas to people in a caravan of Central American migrants, and said the procession of 1,000 or so migrants that drew criticism from President Donald Trump had begun to disperse. Some migrants who awoke at the camp Wednesday said they would try their luck at requesting asylum in the United States, others in Mexico.

President Donald Trump pledged “strong action today” on immigration, a day after he said he wants to use the military to secure the U.S.-Mexico border until his “big, beautiful wall” is erected. In an early-morning tweet Wednesday, Trump said “Our Border Laws are very weak” and said Democrats “stand in our way” of new laws. He added “We will be taking strong action today.”
