$10M Awarded To 6 CSU Campuses To Support Latino STEM Education

The National Science Foundation (NSF) has awarded six California State University campuses $10 million to support Latino STEM Education fields.

Fullerton, Northridge, Pomona, Sacramento, San Diego and Stanislaus are among the 31 colleges and universities to receive NSF’S first-ever grant program intended to increase retention and graduation rates for STEM students that are attending Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs).

A U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics study projected an immediate need to increase Latinos in STEM fields since they are the nation’s fastest growing student population. Thanks to the grant funding these campuses will develop projects that focus specifically on supporting STEM student transfers from community colleges, faculty development and reducing high repetition rates in lower division STEM courses.

So far, Stanislaus State is working on improving STEM student success by developing a faculty culture of evidence-based teaching and student-centered learning environments, and the grant is funding a “HSI Resource Hub” for Cal State Northridge and New Mexico State University’s collaboration.
