Hundreds of hopeful athletes have a chance to become professional major league baseball players each year during the Major League Baseball or MLB First-Year Player Draft. This three-day event, which ended June 10, involved 40 rounds where teams such as the Yankees, the Cardinals and the Red Sox negotiate for their top picks to join their ranks.

In addition to fans being able to follow the draft on television, they can also track it via the MLB’s online Draft Tracker. This search engine on the MLB website gives not only player stats such as height, weight and position but also their high schools or colleges.

Although in the first round of the draft 36 young men were selected to join major league teams, their schooling did not involve 36 separate states. Instead six states stood out as having multiple first round draftees attend both their high schools and colleges with California boasting having the most draftees hail from one of their higher education institutions:

• Dillon Tate: University of California – Santa Barbara (drafted by the Texas Rangers)
• James Kaprielian: UCLA (drafted by the New York Yankees)
• Taylor Ward: Fresno State (drafted by the Los Angeles Angels)
• Kyle Holder: University of San Diego (drafted by the New York Yankees)

Beyond the Draft Tracker, baseball fans can also explore top 2015 prospective players on MLB.com, including 30 international standout athletes. This year the Dominican Republic dominated this list with 19 of the 30 players. Venezuela came in second with six top prospects making the cut and Cuba ranked third with two.
