Central College kicks off $15 million gym expansion project
PELLA, Iowa (AP) — Central College is kicking off a $15 million project to expand and improve a campus athletic facility.
School officials say a groundbreaking ceremony will be held Friday to begin construction on the P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium. The college has already raised $11 million through private donations to begin expanding the gym. Fundraising is ongoing to raise additional money for renovations.
The 47-year-old gym will get a hall to honor student athletes, new locker rooms, a new wrestling room and a larger hitting cage area for softball, baseball and golf teams.
The project is under an ongoing effort called the Forever Dutch Initiative, which aims to improve the school's athletics complex.
The college will honor the family of Pella Corp. founder P.H. "Pete" Kuyper for the $4.2 million donated to the initiative.
