College athletes volunteer to help Flint amid water crisis
FLINT, Mich. (AP) — College athletes are among those volunteering to help Flint amid the city's crisis with lead-tainted drinking water.
The state says student athletes from Michigan State University will be in Flint on Friday to help with recycling and water distribution efforts, including collection of empty water bottles and distribution of recycling bags and bins at the Northwest Shopping Center.
Flint residents are asked to bring in empty water bottles. Schupan Recycling, Republic Services and the Michigan Community Service Commission are part of the effort.
Last month, Eastern Michigan University and partners including the Ypsilanti school's Department of Athletics launched a water drive for Flint.
The department's 48-foot football equipment truck was made available for the effort and members of the school's football team delivered water. Another delivery Feb. 12 is planned.
