The City University of New York colleges has received a record $6 million in federal grants for the schools’ Early Childhood Centers (ECCs). These grants will benefit the student-parents that rely on their services. The grant funds enable ECC to be open until 10 p.m. at Bronx Community College where 55 percent have children under five and work while taking classes.

Grants Are For Early Childhood Centers
The City University of New York colleges has received a record $6 million in federal grants for the schools’ Early Childhood Centers (ECCs). These grants will benefit the student-parents that rely on their services.
The grant funds enable ECC to be open until 10 p.m. at Bronx Community College where 55 percent have children under five and work while taking classes. ECC is assists thousands of CUNY student-parents who face obstacles in pursuing their educational goals because of child care issues. The additional funding allows these students to stay in college.
Bronx Community College’s ECC offers music, yoga and various other activities not seen at centers off campus. Through the U.S. Department of Education’s Child Care Access Means Parents in School Program awards the grants to support on-campus child care services to serve the needs of low-income students.
CUNY colleges have been receiving funds since 1999 and this funding not only helps the child care centers but also the amount of CUNY schools that can provide child care. Awarded schools have included Brooklyn College, Baruch College, Bronx Community College, LaGuardia Community College, Kingsborough Community College, Lehman College, Medgar Evers College, New York City College of Technology and Borough of Manhattan Community Colleges.
