Dr. Ernest Lara Retires From EMCC

Dr. Rey Rivera is succeeding Dr. Ernest Lara who was first appointed president of Estrella Mountain Community College (EMCC) on July 1, 2007.

According to EMCC’s website, Dr. Lara brought “more than 30-years of higher education experience to his role as president of Estrella Mountain Community College” and his “extensive career reflects a strong commitment to student development and the community college mission.”

That extensive career, as well as his role as a “committed community member” includes:

• working at three of the Maricopa Community Colleges, as well as at Arizona State University as:

o a faculty member

o student services program director

o division chair

o dean of student services

 

• serving on local boards/organizations, including:

o West Valley Hospital Board of Directors

o West Valley Think Tank

o Valle del Sol

o Hispanic Leadership Forum del Oeste Advisory Board

o Estrella Rotary

o Leadership West

o Luke Air Force - Honorary Commanders Program

 

Dr. Lara’s education background includes receiving an associate degree from Glendale Community College, as well as the following from Arizona State University:

 

• Bachelor of Arts in History

• Master of Guidance and Counseling

• Master of Counseling

• Ph.D. from the Higher and Adult Education Program with an emphasis in student development
