COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Criminal defense attorneys Koenig & Long LLC have announced an award known as The Troublemaker Scholarship. The $1,500 grant is available to high school seniors in and around Columbus, Ohio, who feel that they have earned reputations as troublemakers.

The scholarship was born of the idea that getting into trouble in high school does not necessarily preclude success in college and that students deserve a second chance. As defense attorneys, the firm principals have encountered many hard-working individuals who made bad choices. They believe that students should have the opportunity to achieve important goals even if they have had a troubled past.

Details of The Troublemaker Scholarship

To apply, students must be citizens of the United States or must have legal authorization to work in the country. They also must be seniors in high school in Columbus, OH or throughout Franklin County. Applicants must have gained college acceptance with undergraduate studies to begin in fall 2017.

The deadline for scholarship application is July 17, 2017. To apply, students must submit:

• A completed application.
• A typed, three-page essay that explains the applicant’s perceived past as a “troublemaker.” In addition, applicants should describe how they believe the experience has affected their lives and their plans for changing their reputations as they go through college.
• Evidence that the applicant has legal status as a resident of the United States. Acceptable proof includes a permanent resident card, a passport, a birth certificate, or other officially issued form of identification.
• A copy of the applicant’s high school transcript.
• A copy of the applicant’s letter of acceptance from a university that is accredited within the United States.

Using the Scholarship

Eligible uses for The Troublemaker Scholarship are tuition and related expenses for an accredited university. Following selection of the winner, Koenig & Long LLC will send a check payable to the accredited university the winner plans to attend to cover authorized expenses. The winner of the scholarship will be required to submit receipts for all expenses paid by the scholarship, as noted in IRS rules.
