Lightning-delayed game could cost U of Illinois 6 figures
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — University of Illinois officials say postponing last Friday's football game could wind up costing the school more than $100,000. And insurance will not cover it.
A long thunderstorm during Friday's opener against Kent State forced postponement until Saturday.
That meant after paying stadium staff, police who direct traffic and others for Friday the university had to do it all again a day later.
Susan Young is a senior associate athletic director. She told The News-Gazette in Champaign (http://bit.ly/1M0fxak ) that police and events staff alone cost $75,000 on a typical game day.
There are other costs, such as $18,000 for an additional night's hotel stay. Teams typically stay at a local hotel ahead of home games.
The Division of Intercollegiate Athletics will cover those additional costs.
