Spotlight on University Presidents

1- Abel Chávez

Our Lady of the Lake University (OLLU) has named Abel A. Chávez, Ph.D., as its 10th president. Dr. Chávez, who took office in July 2022, is a higher education leader, former businessman and engineer. He has served Western Colorado University as vice president for Enrollment and Student Success, dean of Graduate Studies and associate vice president for Academic Affairs. Before entering academia, Dr. Chávez founded a consulting company in Denver and worked as an engineer in a Denver suburb.

As a first generation student, Dr Chávez earned four degrees including an MBA and a doctorate in Civil and Environmental Engineering.

2- Vanya Quiñones

The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees has appointed Vanya Quiñones, Ph.D., to serve as the fourth president of California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB). Quiñones currently serves as provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs at Pace University in New York.

Quiñones has served in a variety of roles over the course of a more than 20-year career at the City University of New York (CUNY) - Hunter College.

Quiñones earned a bachelor's degree in biology and master's degree in cell biology, both from the University of Puerto Rico, and a Ph.D. in neurobiology and physiology from Rutgers University.

3- Santa J. Ono

Santa J. Ono, Ph.D., has been named the 15th president of the University of Michigan. He will officially step into the role on October 13, 2022. Ono is currently the 15th president and vice chancellor of the University of British Columbia, where he has served since 2016. Prior to this position, Ono served as the 28th president of the University of Cincinnati and senior vice provost and deputy to the provost at Emory University. He also served as professor of pediatrics at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. A vision researcher educated at the University of Chicago and McGill University, Ono holds honorary doctorates from Chiba University and the Vancouver School of Theology.

4- Michael A. Elliott

Michael A. Elliott has been named Amherst College’s 20th president. Elliott has served as professor of English at Emory University since 2004, and dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the same institution since 2017. At Emory, Elliott served in several other key administrative roles, including senior associate dean of faculty, executive associate dean and interim dean. He earned a B.A., summa cum laude, from Amherst College with a dual major in English and Russian, and a Ph.D. from Columbia University with distinction in English and comparative literature.

5- Steve Stoute

The Canisius College Board of Trustees has named Steve K. Stoute, J.D., the institution’s 25th president. Stoute, currently vice president for strategic initiatives and chief of staff at the of DePaul University in Chicago, joined DePaul in 2018 to serve as chief of staff, and became vice president for strategic initiatives in 2020. Stoute graduated magna cum laude from Seton Hall, with a bachelor's degree in business administration. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he completed a master's degree in exercise and sport science. He earned a J.D. from the University of Pennsylvania Law School.

6- Sandra Cassady

The Rockhurst University Board of Trustees has selected Sandra Cassady, Ph.D., to become the 15th president of this institution. Cassady, who earned a Ph.D. in exercise science from the University of Iowa, comes to Rockhurst from St. Ambrose University in Davenport, Iowa, where she served as vice president for strategic initiatives and dean of the College of Health and Human Services. Since 2003, Cassady has served as a member of the Higher Learning Commission’s peer review corps, the Institutional Actions Council, and the Specialized Review Corps, where she deals with complex and challenging issues faced by institutions of higher education.
