At H.O., we extend our warmest congratulations to the newly appointed education leaders who have taken on the challenging but immensely fulfilling path of educational leadership.

Minouche Shafik

Minouche Shafik has been appointed the 20th president of Columbia University, effective July 2023. Dr. Shafik has led the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) since 2017. She began her career at the World Bank, becoming the bank’s youngest-ever vice president at the age of 36. She later served as Permanent Secretary of the U.K.’s Department for International Development.

She holds a Bachelor of Arts in economics and politics from the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, where she graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa; a Master of Science in economics from the LSE; and a Doctor of Philosophy in economics from St Antony's College, Oxford University.

Hector Balderas

Hector Balderas assumed his new role as president of Northern New Mexico College on January 1, 2023. Dr. Balderas earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from New Mexico Highlands University and a Juris Doctor degree from the University of New Mexico Law School. Balderas was elected as N.M. state auditor in 2006 and attorney general in 2014. In addition, Balderas has worked with the University of New Mexico and New Mexico State University to implement on-campus safety reforms. Dr. Balderas has received numerous awards and fellowships, including the Liberty and Justice Award from the New Mexico Hispanic Bar Association, an Aspen Institute Fellowship, and a fellowship with the US Army War College Commandant’s National Security Program.

Stanley J. Elliott

Fayetteville State University (FSU) appointed Stanley J. Elliott, Ph.D., senior advisor to the chancellor, effective January 3, 2023.

Elliott comes to FSU from Lenoir Community College in Kinston, North Carolina, where he served as vice president for student services and institutional effectiveness/Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC) liaison since July 2020. He held pivotal leadership roles with colleges and universities across the state, including community colleges (Lenoir Community College, Roanoke-Chowan Community College, Piedmont Community College) and four-year institutions (N.C. State University, Shaw University, St. Augustine’s University, Livingstone College).
