WASHINGTON -- El Caucus Nacional de Legisladores Estatales Hispanos (NHCSL, por sus siglas en inglés) anunció los ganadores de la Beca de Liderazgo John S. Martínez. Una subvención de $4,000 será entregada a 11 estudiantes latinos destacados para ayudar a pagar sus primeros dos años de matrícula universitaria. Esta beca es posible gracias a la Fundación Comcast y su compromiso con la comunidad hispana, ahora con el apoyo generoso de Honda.

"Nos complace anunciar los ganadores de la Beca John S. Martínez de este año. Los ganadores de este año son parte de un grupo impresionante de jóvenes que ayudarán a resolver los problemas más complejos del futuro. Los estudiantes latinos tienen una necesidad particular de recibir apoyo para poder completar sus estudios universitarios y nos enorgullece poder tener un rol pequeño en facilitar su ruta hacia el éxito", dijo el Presidente de NHCSL Ángel Cruz, quien es Representante Estatal de Pensilvania.

A pesar de que la cantidad de latinos matriculados en la universidad ha aumentado – de 22% en 1993 a 35% en 2014 – los latinos todavía tienen tasas demasiado bajas de completar sus estudios. De acuerdo al Centro de Investigaciones Pew, solo 15% de los latinos entre las edades de 25 y 29 han completado un grado de bachillerato, comparado al 41% de los anglosajones no hispanos de las mismas edades. Varios expertos concuerdan que la brecha entre estar matriculados y completar los estudios en muchos casos se debe a dificultades financieras, entre otros factores. Por eso es que programas como la Beca John S. Martínez de NHCSL pueden hacer una diferencia en las vidas de estos estudiantes jóvenes.

El Director Ejecutivo de NHCSL, Kenneth Romero Cruz, dijo que: "Esta beca no sería posible sin el liderato y la visión de la Fundación Comcast. Por los pasados diez años, Comcast ha auspiciado la Beca de Liderazgo John S. Martínez y es gracias a ese compromiso que podemos ayudar a estos estudiantes a obtener su grado universitario. El apoyo generoso de Honda nos ha permitido proveerles a los ganadores asistencia adicional para ayudarlos a pagar su segundo año de universidad. Esperamos poder expandir el programa en el futuro para que incluya los cuatro años de universidad. La Beca de Liderazgo John S. Martínez está diseñada específicamente para ayudar a estudiantes hispanos de secundaria para que puedan tener éxito educacional. Este programa ha sido implementado dentro de los 43 estados y territorios que tienen legisladores hispanos. El esfuerzo se ha llevado a cabo en colaboración con los legisladores estatales hispanos en los estados y las escuelas basado en sus distritos respectivos. La beca se le entregará al estudiante luego de graduarse de la secundaria y cuando haya sido aceptado en una universidad. La beca para el segundo año será remitida luego de que el estudiante complete satisfactoriamente su primer año.

WASHINGTON -- The National Hispanic Caucus of State Legislators (NHCSL) announced the winners of the John S. Martínez Leadership Scholarship. A $4,000 grant is provided for the first two years of college tuition to 11 highly deserving Latino students. This scholarship is possible thanks to the Comcast Foundation and their commitment to the Hispanic community, and now with the generous support of Honda.

"We are thrilled to announce this year's John S. Martínez Scholarship award recipients. This year's recipients form an impressive cadre of talented young men and women who will help solve our country's most vexing problems in the future. Latino students are in particular need of assistance to complete their college education and we are excited to be able to play a small role in facilitating their journey to success," NHCSL President and Pennsylvania State Representative Ángel Cruz said.

Although college enrollment for Latinos has dramatically improved – from 22% in 1993 to 35% in 2014 –Latinos still have disproportionately low college completion rates. According to the Pew Research Center, only 15% of Latinos between the ages of 25 and 29 have completed their bachelor's degree, compared to 41% of non-Hispanic Whites of the same age group. Many experts agree that the gap between enrollment and completion in many cases is due to financial hardship, among other factors. That is why scholarship programs like NHCSL's John S. Martinez Scholarship can make a difference in these young students' lives.

NHCSL Executive Director Kenneth Romero-Cruz stated that: "This scholarship program would not be possible without the leadership and vision of the Comcast Foundation. For the last ten years, Comcast has sponsored the John S. Martínez Leadership Scholarship and it is thanks to their commitment that we are able to help these students obtain their degree. Honda's generous support has allowed us to provide award recipients with help paying for their second year of college and we hope to expand the program in the future to include all four years of higher education. We cannot thank Comcast and Honda enough for their support and look forward to continue our productive collaboration."

The John S. Martinez Leadership Scholarship program is specifically designed to help Hispanic high school students achieve educational success. This program has been implemented within the 43 states and territories that have Hispanic state legislators. This effort has been implemented in collaboration with Hispanic state legislators in the states and the schools based in their respective districts. The scholarship will be provided to the student upon graduation from high school and acceptance into a higher education institution. Support for the second year is provided upon satisfactory completion of the first year.
