BALTIMORE (AP) — The story of Baltimore students raising more than $1,000 for Hurricane Harvey relief has gotten the attention of Ellen DeGeneres.

City Springs Elementary/Middle School teacher Wyatt Oroke told The Baltimore Sun that he and the students who organized the fundraiser will be featured Friday on DeGeneres' syndicated television talk show.

Oroke showed his eighth grade students photos of the damage in Houston during the first week of school. They immediately asked how they could help.

Oroke says he thinks the students have stronger empathy because they have seen that side of things. He says, "It's oftentimes striking how we see those who have the least give the most."

Parents, teachers and fellow students were asked for donations. The initial goal was $500, now at least $2,000 has been collected.
