Hispanic Outlook featured baseball legends Mariano Rivera and Edgar Martínez, as well as Jaime Jarrín, the longest tenured broadcaster in the MLB, in our Sports and Summer Programs Issue:

2 MLB Champions Of Bilingualism

Inside the opulent ballroom at the St. Regis New York Hotel in New York City while waiting for the annual Baseball Hall of Fame news conference to commence, I was awestruck to be in the presence of two newly-minted Latino Hall of Fame inductees: Edgar Martínez and a legendary relief pitcher. Throughout the news conference, not only did I hear the customary language I grew up speaking in school but how overjoyed I was to hear the language I was accustomed to speaking with my beloved parents who grew up on a small island in the Caribbean. It was music to my ears. Era música para mis oidos. This extraordinary moment would be historic considering it was the first time in the history of the National Baseball Hall of Fame elections that two Latino ballplayers would be enshrined in the same year. Both players impacted the game in their respective careers, but it was this phenomenal pitcher for…

Mariano Rivera has also been featured on Hispanic Outlook’s website as part of our Breaking News & Top Stories:

Mariano Rivera Makes Hall Of Fame

NEW YORK (AP) — This honor was saved for the one and only Mariano Rivera. Not Babe Ruth. Not Hank Aaron. Not Cy Young. Not until "The Sandman" could everyone agree. Rivera became baseball's first unanimous Hall of Fame selection, elected Tuesday along with Edgar Martinez, Mike Mussina and the late Roy Halladay. Rivera received all 425 votes in balloting announced by the Baseball Writers' Association of America. Ken Griffey Jr. held the mark for top percentage at 99.32 when he was on 437 of 440 ballots two years ago. "Beyond my imagination," Rivera said.

The quartet will be enshrined in Cooperstown along with Today's Game Era Committee selections Harold Baines and Lee Smith on July 21. Rivera is baseball's career saves leader with 652. With a steady...

In addition, Hispanic Outlook’s new supplement Physician Outlook highlights remarkable physicians in its regular Physician Spotlight feature:

Dr. Amaryllis Sánchez Wohlever, M.D.

Q. Why did you originally become a doctor, and do you feel your purpose in the medical field has changed over the years?

A. As a little girl, I loved playing with toy medical kits and pretending to be a doctor. I loved every tool in the kit—the bandages, syringes and the iconic stethoscope. My parents, brother, cousins, neighbors and even our puppies were reluctant patients! Then in middle school, I learned about Mother Teresa, and her compassion and deep prayer life inspired me to become a physician. Yet, it was my mother’s belief in me that led me to apply to medical school and begin the arduous journey to becoming a physician. I graduated from Penn State University College of Medicine, served as chief resident and have been blessed with a rewarding 25-year career as a family physician…

Dr. Ileana Leyva

Palliative care is one of those areas of Medicine that evokes reactions of fear and confusion among Patients and their families. It also presents challenges for Doctors. When Dr. Ileana Leyva was a pediatrician in the intensive care unit of one of Chicago’s city’s hospitals, a 10-year-old boy with cerebral palsy and pneumonia had been placed on BIPAP despite being a DNR to try and get him through the pneumonia. “His mom was livid!” Leyva recounted. “She asked me, ‘Who are you to contradict 10 years of my decisions? He has a DNR—why did you change it? You kept him alive to live like this?’” Levya reveals in a testimonial for VITAS Healthcare, “I had no answer. I had never thought of it that way. I didn’t even know what palliative care was.” However, she made it her business to find out and immersed herself in a program that focused on the discipline…

Dr. Daniel Olivero, M.D.

Dr. Daniel Olivero, whose family is from Dominican Republic, grew up in a South Bronx housing project. It was a place where parents’ aspirations for their children were basic—stay alive and don’t join a gang. He has, by all measures, wildly surpassed those modest expectations. “After undergrad, I worked for four years in a very comfortable, but very boring, office job,” Dr. Olivero explained, “I was bored and wanted an intellectual challenge, so I decided to go to med school in Dominican Republic.” It was a decision that brought him this welcomed challenge and his life’s passion. Dedicated to the health and wellness of infants and children, Dr. Olivero is a board-certified pediatrician and has served on the Board of Directors of the Lewisburg Children’s Museum as chair of health education. Dr. Olivero is dually board certified in addiction Medicine and is…
