Puerto Rico Seeks Statehood In Hurricane Aftermath [Beyond Education]

The island territory of Puerto Rico is making a new plea to become a state by no later than January 1, 2021. Representatives are pushing statehood due to concerns about unequal treatment of Puerto Ricans in the aftermath of Hurricanes Irma and Maria. The bill has been gaining bipartisan support and currently has 37 co-sponsors.

The bill has been gaining bipartisan support and currently has  37 co-sponsors.

Both Congress and President Trump would have to pass a statute in order for Puerto Rico to become a state.
