Rutgers University will serve as New Jersey’s Center on Gun Violence Research. The new initiative focuses on the university’s expertise in public health, criminal justice and other fields that deal with the nationwide problem.
New Jersey will now have their own research center that will fill in the knowledge gap between the federal government’s inaction and the obstruction from the gun industry. The center will conduct multi-disciplinary research on the causes, consequences and solutions for firearm-related violence such as homicides, assaults, suicides and accidental shootings. They will gather community-level data on gun violence and other public health factors while exploring ways to reduce gun violence across the nation and around the world and figure out how to incorporate new technologies to improve gun safety and create policy proposals that promote gun violence prevention and educate the public.
The center is a collaboration among the Rutgers School of Public Health, Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University-Newark, and as well as expertise from Rutgers University New Brunswick and Rutgers University Camden. Firearm violence is one of the biggest public health problems throughout the United States.
