Rutgers School of Nursing-Camden’s new model for educating nurses has received a 2018 American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN) Innovations in Professional Nursing Award that recognizes the outstanding work of AACN member schools that have re-envisioned traditional nursing education models leading to future change.
The Nursing school certificate in Spanish for health professions program aims to provide health equity for underserved Latino and immigrant populations with stronger Spanish language skills for future health care professionals. Health professionals will be able to serve diverse communities because of the program.
The U.S. Department of Education’s International and Foreign Language Education office supported the program with a $600,000 grant. Under the grant Rutgers-Camden campus programs School of Nursing, the Department of World Languages and Cultures’ Spanish program, the Community Leadership Center, and the Learning Abroad program have been able to work in conjunction with each other.
According to U.S. Census data 40 percent of Camden’s residents speak Spanish, and the program provides the opportunity to better educate and communicate the language to serve the needs of the community. Rutgers will receive the award in October during the AACN Academic Nursing Leadership Conference in Washington, D.C.
