University Of Utah Reassigns Grad Assistant Over Gun Policy

The University of Utah has reassigned a graduate assistant who was teaching a class at the school because of statements she made about bringing a concealed carry gun to class. The grad assistant stated that it “is absurd, antisocial, and frightening behavior,” and that if any of her students brought a concealed carry gun to class, she would force them to stand in a “3x3 taped square.”

Job News: Oklahoma Approves Record Number Of Emergency Teachers

The Oklahoma Board of Education approved 916 emergency certificates for non-traditionally trained teachers. This increases the total number of approved certificates to 2,153 for the 2018-19 school year. The state’s superintendent of public instruction has said that Oklahoma is "now experiencing the full weight" of the teacher shortage.

Entrepreneurs' $4M Fund Offers Scholarships To Students

Wisconsin and Minnesota students have a new scholarship opportunity. Wisconsin entrepreneurs Marty Ryan and Richard Sterbenz have set up a $4 million fund, which will allow scholarships to be awarded annually to about 100 students. Those eligible include students attending a two- or four-year college.

Endowed Scholarship At Wesleyan For Land Institute Founder

Alumni from Kansas Wesleyan University have established the Conservation Endowed Scholarship. Created to honor the founder of The Land Institute, Wes Jackson, the scholarship will be awarded each year to a biology student at Kansas Wesleyan University that is in good academic standing.

Bill Gates Directs Education Funding To Poor US Schools

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation have announced the first round of nearly $100 million to help middle and high schools in 13 states. This first round will benefit a specific 19 program initiatives, and Gates has also pledged $460 million over the next five years to fund programs to help low-income and minority students get into college.

Rhode Island Bans Guns On School Grounds, Except With Police

A new directive is barring all guns from schools in Rhode Island with the exception of those carried by law enforcement personnel. Prior to this directive, individuals with concealed-carry permits could bring guns into schools, and the rules regarding guns also varied between school districts.

50 Years After Student Massacre, Mexico Students Strike

Students at Mexico's National Autonomous University in Mexico City, Mexico's largest university, went on strike today. Students were demanding an end to violence by groups of thugs. These groups often register but don't attend classes, and on Monday, thugs attacked protesters from a university-affiliated high school who were demonstrating for free speech and against fees.
