Marshall University says in a news release that presidents and representatives of the 10 schools (Bluefield State College; BridgeValley, Mountwest, New River and Southern West Virginia community and technical colleges; Concord University; the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine; West Virginia State University, and West Virginia University Tech) will introduce the Alliance for Economic Development for Southern West Virginia at the state Capitol.

The Latest: US to End Special Protections for Salvadorans [Beyond Education]

Officials say the Trump administration is ending special protections for Salvadoran immigrants, forcing nearly 200,000 to leave the country or face deportation. El Salvador is the fourth country whose citizens have lost Temporary Protected Status under President Donald Trump. They have by far been the largest beneficiaries of the program, which provides humanitarian relief for foreigners whose countries are hit with natural disasters or other strife.

Coppin State U Senior Starts GoFundMe Campaign Raising More Than $26K for Students in Need [On a Positive Note in Education]

After some Baltimore public school students had to wear their coats and hats in cold classrooms amid severe winter weather, Coppin State University senior Samierra Jones started a GoFundMe campaign to raise money for space heaters, hats, coats and gloves. By Thursday afternoon, the fundraiser had collected more than $26,000.

Long Island University-Brooklyn Locks Out Faculty

Administrators at Long Island University’s Brooklyn campus in New York have locked out their 400 faculty members in an unprecedented hostile move that will upend the start of classes on Wednesday. Currently, nearly half of the Brooklyn faculty are paid less than their LIU Post (Nassau County campus) counterparts, yet both campuses charge the same tuition and faculty credentials are equivalent.

Ohio College Opens Entirely Gluten-free Dining Hall

Kent State University in Ohio has opened what it says is the first entirely gluten-free dining hall in the country. The school restructured Prentice Cafe in Prentice Hall after administrators noticed a rising number of students with intolerance to gluten. The cafe was certified by the Gluten-Free Food Services Certification Program.

University Suggests Students Not Drink Water Because of Lead

Rowan University in New Jersey has disconnected water fountains and handed out bottled water in dorms after finding elevated lead levels. The school found the elevated lead levels after reports of discolored water in an administrative building in July. It then tested and found elevated levels in other buildings, including two residence halls.

Research shows Head Start pays for itself, pays off for children

Expanding Head Start is good public policy and will pay for itself, according to new research by faculty in the University of California, Berkeley’s economics department and Goldman School of Public Policy. The UC Berkeley researchers found that every dollar invested generates $2 in future earnings for children enrolled in the program.

Guttman Ranked Best Community College in New York State

The top-ranked community college in New York State is the Stella and Charles Guttman Community College of The City University of New York, according to the 2016-2017 edition of Best Community Colleges. Published by EDsmart, the Best Community Colleges rankings compared outcomes from 121 New York State community colleges on retention, transfer and graduation rates, as well as net price to attend.

SLCC First To Benefit From T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood Scholarships

The Utah Association for the Education of Young Children (UAEYC) has launched a new scholarship project called T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Utah, which is making its debut with Salt Lake Community College. T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood® Utah pays for tuition, books, a travel stipend and paid released time from work to attend classes and to study.

The University of Texas Libraries and the College of Fine Arts at The University of Texas at Austin are launching a new productivity space. “The Foundry,” a new maker space set to open in the Fine Arts Library (FAL), will provide tools within a space where students can gather to create independently or collaboratively.

SC State Getting $900,000 from Feds to Upgrade Labs

South Carolina State University is receiving almost $900,000 from the federal government to upgrade laboratory space at the Orangeburg school. The grant is part of about $19 million the U.S. Department of Agriculture is awarding to improve food science labs at historically black land-grant colleges and universities.

Georgia State Researchers Get Grant to Study What Helps, Hinders Post-Disaster School Recovery

Georgia State University researchers have received a grant from the National Science Foundation to study how schools can recover and return to operations faster following natural disasters. The $293,000 grant will be used to examine how 400 Texas public schools recovered after Hurricane Ike in 2008.

Henry Ford College’s 12-Week Classes Begin Sept. 15

Henry Ford College’s fall 12-week session of classes begins Sept. 15 and offering more than 120 associate degree and certification programs, as well as a new bachelor’s degree program in Culinary Arts. HFC has also formed partnerships with Madonna University, Siena Heights University (SHU), and Eastern Michigan University (EMU), creating a University Center on its main campus.

University of South Carolina Collects Books for Louisiana

The University of South Carolina's College of Information and Communications is collecting books to help rebuild elementary school libraries devastated by the Louisiana floods. New books and school supplies are being gathered through Thursday. Donations may be dropped off at the Center for Children's Books and Literacy, at the School of Journalism and Mass Communications, and at the School of Library and Information Science.

The happiest students in the country are at Rice University, according to the Princeton Review’s 2017 edition of “The Best 381 Colleges.” The new college guide ranks Rice No. 1 for happiest students and for lots of race/class interaction. Rice is also No. 9 for best quality of life.
