ACLU Lawsuit Accuses US Of Wrongfully Denying Asylum

The American Civil Liberties Union sued the U.S. government Tuesday over its efforts to prevent immigrants from seeking asylum due to domestic and gang violence in their home countries. The ACLU's lawsuit asks a judge to invalidate Attorney General Jeff Sessions' June 11 decision to restrict the kinds of cases that qualify for asylum.

For Now, Army Suspends Discharges Of Immigrant Recruits

The U.S. Army has stopped discharging immigrant recruits who enlisted seeking a path to citizenship — at least temporarily. A memo shared with The Associated Press on Wednesday and dated July 20 spells out orders to high-ranking Army officials to stop processing discharges of men and women who enlisted in the special immigrant program, effective immediately.

Argentine Senate Rejects Legalizing Elective Abortion

Argentina's Senate on Thursday rejected a bill to legalize elective abortion, a defeat for a grassroots movement that came closer than ever to achieving the decriminalization of the procedure in the homeland of Pope Francis. Lawmakers debated for more than 15 hours and voted 38-31 against the measure that would have legalized abortion in the first 14 weeks of pregnancy.

Venezuela Ruling Party Cracks Down On Opposition Lawmakers

Venezuela's pro-government constitutional assembly stripped two opposition lawmakers of their immunity from prosecution on Wednesday, accusing them of having roles in a drone attack that authorities say was an attempt to kill socialist President Nicolas Maduro. The National Constituent Assembly voted unanimously to lift the protection for Julio Borges and Juan Requesens, who have seats in the opposition-controlled legislature.

US Judge Halts Deportation, Threatens Sessions With Contempt

A federal judge on Thursday halted a deportation in progress and threatened to hold Attorney General Jeff Sessions in contempt if the mother and daughter weren't returned to the U.S. U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan of Washington learned in court that the two plaintiffs in a lawsuit before him were being removed from the United States.

First Of Its Kind Mural In Mexico Inaugurated As Part Of Social Impact Program

Three hundred hillside homes in Monterrey, Mexico, are the site of a first of its kind mural that is part of the Comex por un México Bien Hecho (“Comex for a Well Done Mexico”) social impact program. The project, which spanned the four months, took more than 300 volunteers and 1,500 residents of Monterrey’s Campana-Altamira neighborhood.

Toxins Turning Up In Dozens Of Public Water Systems

Toxic industrial compounds like the kind found in nonstick cookware, carpets and fast-food wrappers are being found in tap water. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) found significant amounts of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) in public water in 33 U.S. states when they tested from 2013-2015, and although advisory limits were set in 2016, PFAS remain a concern today.

WW2 Museum, Arizona State U, Create Online Master's Degree

Arizona State University in conjunction with The National World War II Museum in New Orleans has created the nation’s only graduate degree in World War II history. This online master’s degree program’s classes will be starting in January of 2019 and will include “short video lectures.”

A state review has found the Shenandoah Valley Juvenile Center in Virginia did not meet the state's legal threshold of abuse or neglect regarding immigrant teens being detained there. The review confirmed that restraint techniques used at the facility can include strapping children to chairs and placing mesh bags over their heads.

Eastern Michigan University’s new 4WARD Graduation Scholarship program will pay for a student’s last two years of college if the student is willing to commit to paying for his or her first two years of tuition at a locked-in rate that’s expected to be a little more than $13,000 a year for 30 credits.

Foe Accused By Maduro Says Venezuela Military Is Fracturing

Exiled Julio Borges, who formerly led the opposition-controlled National Assembly in Venezuela, said the fact that two high-ranking military officers have been arrested in connection to the attempted assassination on President Nicolas Maduro points to increased fracturing within Venezuela’s armed forces. The failed attack on Maduro involved drones loaded with plastic explosives.
