Education Dept. Proposals On Guns In Schools Sparks Outcry

Should states be allowed to use federal funds be used to purchase guns for schools? This is the question being considered by the Education Department. Democratic lawmakers and educators, however, are widely criticizing the possible plan with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi calling the idea "one of the most egregious, short-sighted and dangerous executive branch abuses of our education system in modern history."

Report: Personnel Issues At Migrant Child Housing Facilities

Inspections of 13 Southwest Key facilities that are housing migrant children separated from their families at the U.S.-Mexico border have revealed personnel records concerns, including personnel records with late applications for fingerprint clearance cards, as well as bedrooms that didn't give enough square footage per individual or didn't have privacy curtains.

As More Immigrants Wear Monitors, Effectiveness Is Disputed

Both advocacy groups and the government are opposing fitting immigrant families caught in the U.S. illegally with electronic monitoring devices. Government officials have said that once deportation proceedings begin, these devices lose their effectiveness. Advocacy groups have said the devices are inhumane and inappropriate.

St. Mary's University Garden Helps Feed Low-Income Residents

A university garden is helping its Minnesota community. St. Mary’s University established its garden a year ago and is currently growing tomatoes, beets, potatoes, onions and asparagus. These produce are donated to the food shelter at Winona Volunteer Services and helps provide free food once a month to low-income residents.

SUNY Oneonta Alumni Use Letters To Help New Students

SUNY Oneonta implemented a new project that aims to help new students transition into college life with letters from alumni. Seventy letters were written to distribute to freshmen and transfer students. Students received letters from alumni that lived in the exact same dorm room when they attended the college.

Hurricane's Death Toll In Puerto Rico Put At Nearly 3,000

The death toll in Puerto Rico regarding Hurricane Maria has been raised to 2,975 by Puerto Rico’s governor, Ricardo Rossello. Previously reports had the number at 64. The new number is due to findings by researchers at the Milken Institute School of Public Health at George Washington University.
