A case of bacterial meningitis has been confirmed at Penn State University. Bacterial meningitis’ symptoms can include stiff neck, headache and fever, and can cause inflammation of the brain. The Motorola Solutions Foundation is gifting $90,000 to the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), enabling SWE to launch a global scholarship program to help advance the education of women pursuing careers in engineering. The donation is expected to fund 18 scholarships each valued at $5,000.

UCF Extends In-State Tuition To Students From Puerto Rico

The University of Central Florida’s trustees voted to waive out-of-state fees for students from Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands who came to the school after Hurricane Maria. West Virginia University Bans 5 Fraternities From Campus

The following fraternities have been banned from West Virginia University (WVU) for at least 10 years: Alpha Sigma Phi, Kappa Alpha Order, Phi Sigma Kappa, Sigma Chi and Theta Chi. These five fraternities wrote letters to become independent of WVU back in August. The fraternities were upset by regulations that were prompted by a university report.

College and high school students have helped a children’s hospital in Indianapolis reach a $50 million fundraising milestone. The students have held dance marathons to raise money for Riley Hospital for Children, and more than 100 schools have participated in these marathons since 1991.

U.S. and Cuban research institutes are creating the first joint U.S.-Cuban biotech venture. Headquartered in Cuba the new initiative aims to bring new cancer therapies to U.S. patients. The Roswell Park Cancer Institute of Buffalo, New York and Cuba’s Center for Molecular Immunology established the Innovative Immunotherapy Alliance SA after the historic 2014 U.S.-Cuban detente.
