U.S. border inspectors allowed some of the Central American asylum-seekers to enter the country for processing. But the migrants who crossed Mexico in a caravan may face a long legal path. Organizers said eight members of the group criticized by President Donald Trump that traveled from southern Mexico to the border city of Tijuana, but U.S. Customs and Border Protection did not provide a number.

US Awards $589M To Puerto Rico's Education Department [Education News]

Puerto Rico's governor says the island's Department of Education will receive $589 million in federal funds to help defray costs related to Hurricane Maria. Gov. Ricardo Rossello said Monday that the money will be released under the federal Restart program. The funds come as Puerto Rico prepares to close 280 public schools amid an 11-year recession and a drop in enrollment.

Facebook plans to partner with Central New Mexico Community College to establish a certificate program in digital marketing, the social media giant announced Monday. Marne Levine — chief operating officer for Instagram, a social media platform owned by Facebook — told people gathered for a small-business training event in Albuquerque that the certificate program will help participants add marketable skills to their resume.

NOT REAL NEWS: No Yellow Star On Michigan Immigrant Licenses [Beyond Education]

Republican state lawmakers in Michigan didn't try to mandate labeling the driver's licenses of immigrants with yellow stars, contrary to a claim in a story circulating on several liberal-leaning sites. The story at themaven and other sites included a meme with a photo of state GOP Rep. Triston Cole and said lawmakers had proposed imprinting yellow stars.

A 2018 national survey found that over a third of university students out of over 20,000 surveyed said they were food insecure, or had had limited or uncertain access to food in the previous 30 days. Transport Plane That Crashed In Georgia Was On Final Trip [Beyond Education]

An aging C-130 Hercules that rescued and resupplied U.S. citizens after last year's hurricanes crashed onto a highway in Georgia during what was supposed to be its final flight, killing all nine Puerto Ricans on board. The huge plane was being flown into retirement in Arizona, reducing Puerto Rico's National Guard fleet to five similar planes, two of which need maintenance and aren't being used.

UMaine System Increasing Tuition By Nearly 3 Percent In Fall [Education News]

Tuition is going up a little less than 3 percent around the University of Maine System this coming fall. The Portland Press Herald reports tuition, fees and room and board at the system's seven campuses will go up by an average of $466, which is 2.9 percent. The numbers were presented on Wednesday to the finance committee of the system's trustees.
