Knight Foundation Renews $250,000 Support For Displaced Puerto Rican Students Studying At MDC

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation has awarded Miami Dade College $250,000, so the school can continue to support students from Puerto Rico who have been displaced by Hurricane Maria. These funds assist these displaced students with living expenses and tuition, as well as other costs associated with emergency relocation.

There was an increase in hiring in the U.S. this past month with employers adding 201,000 jobs. The unemployment rate stayed near an 18-year low at 3.9 percent. These stats may indicate businesses and consumers will continue spending even though there are ongoing conflicts between the Trump administration and its trading partners.

Fairmont State U, Foundation In Fight Against Student Hunger

A partnership between Fairmont State University, Aladdin Food Services and the Wesley Foundation is providing students on campus with three or four hot lunches weekly. The Foundation is located across the street from the University and has provided food to hungry students for years.

Mexico 'Evaluating' US Offer To Pay For Deporting Migrants

While Mexico’s Interior Department has said that no agreement has been reached yet, its government is currently “evaluating” an offer from the U.S. to pay for returning foreign migrants in Mexico to their home countries. If accepted, this offer would mainly impact Central American migrants, many of whom attempt to cross the U.S. border by using Mexico as a base.

$25M Donation Set To Fuel Vanderbilt Military Scholarships

The Lee and Ramona Bass Foundation has donated $25 million to support a scholarship program for veterans at Vanderbilt University. The new program, which is to be named the Bass Military Scholars Program, will fund at least six scholarships for veterans starting in the school year for 2019-2020.

CUNY Awarded $3.97M Grant From National Science Foundation

The City University of New York (CUNY) is being awarded a five-year, $3.97 million Louis Stokes STEM Pathways and Research Alliance Implementation Project grant from the National Science Foundation. Duke, UNC Collecting Donations For Hurricane Florence Relief

The University of North Carolina and Duke University have begun collecting donations to aid those impacted by Hurricane Florence. Requested items for donation include cleaning supplies, water and nonperishable food. Donations can be brought to designated gates at Wallace Wade Stadium or the ticket office at Duke.
