US Again Slashing Number Of Refugees It Will Accept

The United States is slashing the number of refugees it will accept from 45,000 to 30,000 for next year. This is the lowest ceiling regarding admitting refugees since the program began back in 1980. Human rights groups criticized the move. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. is still committed to providing sanctuary to those fleeing from the most dangerous areas in the world.

Louisiana University Collects Florence Disaster Supplies

Northwestern State University students are helping residents in North and South Carolina with clean up after Hurricane Florence. Dr. Curt Phifer, a biology professor at the University, is spearheading an effort to collect cleaning supplies and has asked campus groups to put together the supplies into buckets for donation.

UMass Amherst Receives $3M Grant To Help Faculty Of Color

The National Science Foundation has awarded its Foundation's ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant to the University of Massachusetts Amherst to help its faculty of color in the STEM fields. As a result, new staff hiring is current underway in the STEM departments.

Colorado College To Fund "Dreamers" Tuition Up Front

Colorado Mountain College has created a new tuition program for “Dreamers.” Called Fund Sueños meaning “the Dream Fund,” the program allows “Dreamers” to wait until after they graduate to repay their education. They do so through a fixed percentage of their income.

University Of Florida Leads In Professor Raises

University of Florida is leading the state when it comes to raises for its professors, according to a new study by the American Association of University Professors. Full-time professors at the University’s Gainesville location got on average an 8.8 percent salary increase in 2017-18.

Cuomo Expands Puerto Rico Recovery, Rebuilding Initiative

Governor Andrew M. Cuomo is expanding the highly successful New York stands with Puerto Rico Recovery and Rebuilding Initiative. They will be deploying 500 more SUNY and CUNY student volunteers and launching a new disaster mental health initiative. SUNY and CUNY volunteers will be cleaning, repairing and restoring damaged homes.

Seattle Mariners' Felix Hernandez Becomes US Citizen

Seattle Mariners’ pitcher Felix Hernandez was among 74 people who became naturalized U.S. citizens at a ceremony on Monday. Originally from Venezuela, Hernandez said the strife in Venezuela is one of the reasons he became a U.S. citizen and that he would like to bring his parents to the United States.

Gloria And Emilio Estefan Receive Gershwin Prize

The Library of Congress has named international superstars Emilio and Gloria Estefan as recipients of the Gershwin Prize for popular song. For the first time in history the award is honoring a married couple and musicians-songwriters of Hispanic descent. The Estefans have been influential leaders infusing rich cultural diversity into the American musical experience.

$90K Scholarship Initiative Opens New Doors For Women

The Motorola Solutions Foundation is gifting $90,000 to the Society of Women Engineers (SWE), enabling SWE to launch a global scholarship program to help advance the education of women pursuing careers in engineering. The donation is expected to fund 18 scholarships each valued at $5,000.
