Arkansas Students Help Community Through 'Blessing Boxes'

Students in the high school EAST program at Cutter Morning Star have created a way to give back to their community through blessing boxes. Lisa Byrd, EAST facilitator for the high school, said the blessing boxes were made from repurposed newspaper racks donated in December from the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette, and will hold pantry items and toiletries people in the community might need.

Sessions: Zero-Tolerance Policy May Split Families At Border [Beyond Education]

A "zero-tolerance" policy toward people who enter the United States illegally may cause families to be separated while parents are prosecuted, U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Monday. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security said it would refer all arrests for illegal entry to federal prosecutors, throwing its weight behind Sessions' policy announced last month to vastly expand criminal prosecutions of people with few or no previous offenses.

School System Plan Will Let Teachers Have Guns In Holsters [Education News]

Another Georgia school system has approved a plan to arm teachers who volunteer to carry weapons. WSB-TV reports that the Fannin County School Board near the Tennessee line on Thursday unanimously approved the policy. The station reports that teachers can have guns holstered under the plan. Guns in bags or purses will not allowed.

College In Missouri Unveils Free-Textbook Program [Education News]

Students taking online or evening classes at a private college in central Missouri will no longer have to pay extra fees or for textbooks with the school's new program. Columbia College President Scott Dalrymple says the school was looking at how to make college more affordable by getting rid of extra fees and combating the rising cost of textbooks.

University Of Memphis Plans To Free Tuition Again This Year [Education News]

Officials say the University of Memphis is going to give students a break and freeze tuition for the 2018-19 academic year. U of M school officials say theirs will likely be the only university in Tennessee, public or private, to not increase tuition this year.

Donation Allows Iowa Library To Clear Fines For Children [On A Positive Note Beyond Education]

The Davenport Public Library has erased nearly $4,000 in fines incurred by hundreds of young cardholders thanks to a donation that's intended to encourage summertime reading. The Community Foundation of the Great River Bend donation has erased fines incurred by about 300 youth cardholders from June 2017 to January 2018.

University Of Iowa Freezes Most Pay Increases [Education News]

The University of Iowa has frozen pay increases for teachers and other staff members until January. The Des Moines Register reports that it's not certain whether the freeze will be lifted then. University administrators blame the freeze on uncertainty about revenue there will be from tuition, fees and state allocations.

HHS Considering Housing Immigrant Children At Military Bases [Beyond Education]

The Health and Human Services Department is considering housing at military bases those children picked up crossing the U.S. border illegally either alone or after being separated from their parents by the government, according to two U.S. officials. One official said the department is looking at four bases in Texas and Arkansas.

Michigan State And Nassar Victims Reach $500M Settlement [Education News]

Michigan State University agreed to pay $500 million to settle claims from more than 300 women and girls who said they were assaulted by sports doctor Larry Nassar in the worst sex-abuse case in sports history, officials announced Wednesday. The deal surpasses the $100 million-plus paid by Penn State University to settle claims by at least 35 people who accused assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky of sexual abuse.
