CU Boulder offers graduate certificate in Applied Shakespeare

Beginning in spring 2017, CU Boulder becomes the first university in the nation to offer a graduate certificate in Applied Shakespeare. The hybrid online and immersive nine-credit course will take place in the classroom, on the stage and online. Students will engage in stage combat, script reading and Elizabethan history.

UT in Knoxville Has Largest Freshmen Class in 30 Years

The University of Tennessee in Knoxville says it is welcoming its largest freshman class in at least 30 years. The university says the class has 4,825 incoming students, marking the sixth consecutive year of freshman growth. Classes don't start for another week, but students are starting to return to campus this week.

A Queen’s University Professor has been awarded a Visiting Fellowship at the world’s number one Think Tank, Brookings. Professor Beverley Milton-Edwards, who is regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on violence, terrorism and security, will undertake a project on Security Governance in the Middle East and the Challenge of Islamism.

Negative Attention from Teachers Can Lead to More Negative Student Behaviors

Previous research has found that student-teacher interactions during the school day are important factors in behavioral and academic outcomes for the students. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri College of Education have developed a new method for observing and measuring teacher interaction with every child in a classroom.

Vincennes University Spending $2M on Coal Mining Safety

Vincennes University is moving ahead with construction of a $2.1 million coal mining safety training center despite concerns about the coal-mining industry's future. The trustees awarded a construction contract last week for the 40,000 square-foot training facility at its Fort Branch campus, located in the heart of Indiana's coal country.

UT Professors Create New Repository for Research into Education of Black Males

To help researchers, journalists and policymakers locate available research on the education of black males, University of Texas College of Education Professors Louis Harrison and Anthony Brown launched The Black Male Education Research Collection, a new website. African American males face many obstacles in education: disproportionate dropout, expulsion and suspension rates, overrepresentation in special education, and underrepresentation in gifted education.

Edwardsville Builds New Fire Station at University

A new fire station is set to open next month on the Edwardsville campus of Southern Illinois University. Edwardsville Fire Chief Rick Welle tells the Belleville News-Democrat (http://bit.ly/2aEexNf) the facility is framed and construction is nearly complete. The $3.8 million fire station will serve the campus and the city's growing west side.

National Science Foundation Awards Nearly $1 Million to CSUF

A grant of nearly $1 million from the National Science Foundation awarded to Cal State Fullerton will fund a new project to recruit and expand the number of underrepresented students majoring ingravitational-wave science and provide a pathway to enter the doctoral program in gravitational-wave astrophysics at Syracuse University.

DCCCD students in management program apply job experience for college credit

David Rubio said he is studying and working his way toward a career in the aviation industry, but he’s had to make some sacrifices in his personal life. Rubio, who is studying management at North Lake College, said he works full time, goes to school at the college’s main campus in Irving after work, and then drives home late in the evening.

Dr. Ricardo Solis begins as LCC’s seventh president

Dr. Ricardo Solis began his tenure as the seventh president of the two-campus Laredo Community College District on Monday, Aug. 1. Before joining the LCC family, Solis served as Executive Dean of Academic, Professional and Technical Education at GateWay Community College in Arizona. He brings to LCC 20 years of experience in international trade and workforce development, including establishing partnerships with Mexico’s Ministry of Education.

University of Connecticut Loses Track of 15 Skulls

Fifteen human skulls are among more than 100 items that went unaccounted for in a routine inventory at the University of Connecticut Health Center. The Hartford Courant reports UConn officials submitted a report last month to the state auditor's office saying the skulls could not be found during two internal searches and an independent inventory by a private company.

Highlands University Gets Big Sheet Music Donation

A sheet music donation to Highlands University is doubling the collection at its music program. The college announced this week that former professor Ron Thielman is giving the school $150,000 worth of sheet music from more than 3,000 scores. Thielman, who retired from New Mexico State University in 1995, says he donated his collection to Highlands because of his fond memories as the school's director of bands.
