Teachers Won't Get 10 Years Of Back Pay

SC Educators Not Receiving $918K

ABBEVILLE, S.C. (AP) — A small school district in South Carolina won't give 94 teachers back pay after their salaries were frozen for a decade because of the Great Recession.

The Abbeville County School District Board of Trustees already agreed to bring the teachers back to where they should be on the pay scale this school year without the freeze.

But the teachers also wanted the $918,000 they should have made if their salaries had been increasing each year.

The Index-Journal of Greenwood reported that Superintendent Betty Jo Hall told trustees that kind of payout could leave the district's finances crippled if there was another recession.

Hall also said there were custodians, bus drivers and other workers who also had their salaries frozen.

Trustees voted 6-3 against giving the back pay.
