(NEWARK, NJ) – Sept. 18, 2015 -- Where can you hear a stellar all-women's mariachi band led by a Puerto Rican–raised Dominican-Mexican singer; a rising star of progressive hip-hop born in Colombia; and the legendary artist-activist Felipe Luciano, founder of the Last Poets and New York’s Young Lords Party? At Rutgers University–Newark’s (RU-N) Latin@ Arts Festival.

Join these dynamic performers/speakers on Oct. 14, 2:30 – 8 p.m., and glimpse the future.

On tap, 2–4 p.m., Norman Samuels Plaza (enter from University Avenue) RU-N campus:

•    I.N.T.I. — a rising star of progressive Afro-Colombian Hip-Hop

•    Flor de Toloache (pictured above) — An all-women's mariachi band with the flavors of salsa, bachata, cumbia and latin jazz

•    Community Health and Educational Resources Fair

•    Local Latin delicacies and arts and crafts

Followed by, 5–8 p.m., Ackerson Hall Atrium, 180 University Ave., RU-N campus:

•    Felipe Luciano (right)— Legendary poet, community activist, journalist, media personality, who will give an illuminating talk on the past, present and future of Latinas/os in the United States and the world. Luciano currently serves as Director of Communications for City of Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka.

The Latin@ Arts Festival is part of a five-event Fall Series produced by RU-N’s Latin@ Studies Working Group (LSWG), presented in partnership with New Jersey Television NJTV and with the City of Newark's Office of Community Partnerships.

“This event is about celebrating Latina/o culture and history—and about commemorating decades of struggle for recognition, celebrating our university's status as an Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), and getting inspired by the role Latinas/os are playing in the future of Newark and the world,” says LSWG Co-Director Laura Lomas, professor of English and American Studies at RU-N. “As an anchor institution of the city of Newark, Rutgers (and LSWG) are reaching out to create programming for and about Latin@ communities on campus and citywide.”

LSWG is a new initiative of faculty and staff at Rutgers University–Newark and is supported by the Office of the Chancellor's Seed Grants and the Dean's Office of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences-Newark.

(NEWARK, NJ) – Sept. 18, 2015 -- ¿Dónde se puede escuchar una banda estelar de mariachis compuesta de mujeres y dirigida por una cantante criada en Puerto Rico, pero de origen dominicano y mexicano; una estrella naciente del hip hop progresista proveniente de Colombia; y el legendario poeta y activista, Felipe Luciano, fundador de los “Original Last Poets” y los “Young Lords” de Nueva York? ¡Aquí, en el Festival de Arte Latino en Rutgers University-Newark!

Únete a estos artistas y dinámicos oradores el 14 de octubre, de 2:30 – 8:00 p.m. y juntos vamos a hacer el futuro.

•    Felipe Luciano (derecha)— Poeta, activista de la comunidad, periodista, personalidad de los medios y la radio, ofrecerá una ponencia iluminando el pasado, el presente y el futuro de la comunidad latina en los Estados Unidos.  Luciano es el Director de Comunicaciones para el alcalde de Newark, Ras J. Baraka.

El Festival de Arte Latino es parte de una serie de cinco actividades organizadas por el “Grupo de Trabajo de Estudios Latinos” (Latin@ Studies Working Group) de RU-N, presentado en asociación con New Jersey Television (NJTV) y con la Oficina de Colaboraciones Comunales de la Ciudad de Newark.

“Este acontecimiento es para celebrar la cultura e historia de los hispanohablantes en la ciudad de Newark y Nueva Jersey — y para conmemorar décadas de lucha por su reconocimiento. Estamos celebrando que nuestra universidad ya está reconocida oficialmente como una institución que sirve a los hispanos (HSI)”, señala Laura Lomas, Co-Directora de LSWG y catedrática de inglés en RU-N. “Como institución ancla de la ciudad de Newark, Rutgers University intenta crear programas de importancia para la comunidad latina en nuestra universidad y en la ciudad entera”.

El Latin@ Studies Working Group es una nueva iniciativa de la facultad, el personal y la administración de Rutgers University–Newark y recibe el apoyo de la Oficina de la Rectora y de la Decana de la Facultad de Artes y Ciencias.
